Glossary

To use this glossary you can either scroll to the entry you wish to view or press 'Ctrl' and 'F' at the same time to bring up a 'Find' box. Type in the word you wish to find and press 'Enter' or 'Return'. This should take you directly to the entry you are looking for, if not you can usually press 'Enter' or 'Return' to find the next one.

  • Account
    An Account is the same as a character, you can only have one character per account.

  • Administrator
    An Administrator is a person who is responsible for the maintenance of a computer or a group of computers. For a home computer this will likely be the owner of the computer, whereas in a school or office this will be a chosen person fluent in information technology.

  • Ban
    A Ban is an enforced punishment which prevents a player from being able to access their account to play the game either temporarily or permanently. These are applied when a player has broken the Rules of Conduct.

  • Ban Appeal
    A Ban Appeal is a message sent to ScapeRune Customer Support explaining any reasons which a player has for why they should not be banned permanently from the game.

  • Billing query
    A Billing query is any question that a user has about their account's subscription which can be answered by the Billing department at ScapeRune.

  • Browser
    A Browser or web browser is a software program which allows a user to view information transferred across the Internet.

  • Character
    A Character is an individual player as they appear in the game world. They can be controlled by their player to perform many actions and communicate with other players. These are created at the same time as an account to play ScapeRune.

  • Customer Support
    Customer Support is a department at ScapeRune dedicated to helping players manage their accounts, answer any game related questions that players have, and to police the game to ensure all players are following the Rules of Conduct.

  • Email
    An Email is a file of data sent over the Internet to a particular address or set of addresses, usually containing text and pictures. ScapeRune will NEVER send an email to any player as we only communicate via the Messaging Inbox.

  • Firefox
    Firefox is a piece of browser software created by the Mozilla Corporation.

  • Forum
    A Forum is a place where players can debate about various issues and also organise trade with one another.

  • Forum Moderator
    A Forum Moderator is a normal player who has been hand picked to help ScapeRune staff ensure that the Rules of Conduct are followed on the forums.

  • Internet Explorer
    Internet Explorer is a piece of browser software created by the Microsoft Corporation.

  • ScapeRune
    ScapeRune, meaning Java Gaming Experts, a UK-based computer games company which produces the online game ScapeRune along with a number of other smaller games.

  • ScapeRune Moderator
    A ScapeRune Moderator is a member of staff who works for the UK based company, ScapeRune. They have special Moderator characters which help them do their jobs. They ALWAYS have gold crowns next to their text when they talk in the chat window.

  • Keylogger
    A Keylogger is a piece of malware which records either the presses of buttons on a keyboard or images from the screen which can then be sent across the Internet to other people thus breaching a user's privacy.

  • Malware
    Malware (malicious software) is a computer program which acts against the computer user's wishes either to damage data, degrade performance or breach their privacy. This includes viruses, trojans, worms and spyware.

  • Member
    A Member is any player who has paid for some membership credit and has some remaining on their account. Their characters are allowed to access the members' services on ScapeRune.

  • Membership Credit
    Membership Credit is the number of days remaining for an account to have access to the members' services on ScapeRune.

  • Message
    A Message is the name for a piece of text which has been received from ScapeRune Customer Support through the Message Inbox.

  • Message Inbox
    The Message inbox is the main method of communication between ScapeRune Customer Support and players of ScapeRune. This is where replies to queries, information about subscriptions and breaches in the Rules of Conduct will be received.

  • Moderator
    A Moderator is a character who has special powers which allow them to perform a function for ScapeRune in ScapeRune or on the forums.

  • Mozilla
    Mozilla is a piece of browser software created by the Mozilla Corporation.

  • Mute
    A Mute is an enforced punishment which removes a player's ability to talk either in the game, the forums or both. These are applied when a player has broken the Rules of Conduct.

  • Password
    A Password is a secret string of characters and numbers which is only known to certain people. This allows control of access to things such as accounts on ScapeRune.

  • Player Moderator
    A Player Moderator is a normal player who has been hand-picked to help ScapeRune staff ensure that the Rules of Conduct are followed in the game.

  • Rules of Conduct
    The Rules of Conduct are a set of rules which you agree to abide by when you create your character for ScapeRune. These define what behaviour is acceptable in the game and on the forums.

  • Spyware
    Spyware is the name for any software which gathers information on a user's browsing and Internet usage habits without their permission.

  • Subscription
    A Subscription is the name given to the standing agreement which allows an account to be automatically paid for by additional membership credit.

    Technical Support is a subsection of Customer Support at ScapeRune which can provide assistance with problems related to the computer or software you are trying to play ScapeRune on.

  • Terms & Conditions
    Terms & Conditions are a set of legally binding rules which you agree to when you create your character for ScapeRune. Click here to view them.

  • Trojan
    A Trojan is a piece of data which appears desirable on the outside but actually contains a more harmful piece of malware.

  • Virus
    A Virus is a piece of malware which acts maliciously on your computer, doing things which deliberately damages or destroy your programs, data and hardware.

  • Windows client
    The Windows client is a small program you can run which will load the ScapeRune website without all of the usual clutter that Internet Explorer has on the screen. This can also fix problems that you are having playing the game.

  • Worm
    A Worm is a piece of malware, similar to a virus, which is designed to copy itself to other nearby computers on a network or Internet until the network is stopped by the volume of data being transmitted.
